Galatea and Simões de Assis are pleased to announce their joint participation in the independent 20th Century fair in New York with a solo booth featuring the artist Heitor dos Prazeres (Rio de Janeiro, 1898 - 1966, Rio de Janeiro)

Heitor began painting as a self-taught artist in 1937 at the age of 40. Until then, he was mainly known as a samba composer and creating costumes for his own musical performances and theater shows. His paintings often depict memories of his past, daily life scenes of the Afro-diasporic population in Rio de Janeiro, and carnival festivities. He was also a pioneer by being involved in the founding oh three of Rio’s first Samba Schools: Deixa Falar, Mangueira, and Portela.
This booth marks the artist’s first solo presentation in New York, For this debut, Galatea and Simões de Assis have prepared an important selection of works that reflects the trajectory and poetics of Heitor dos Prazeres.

The Independent 20th Century takes place from September 5 to 8 at Cipriani South Street in NY, booth D3.
