Gabriella Marinho b. 1993
Gabriella Marinho (1993, Niterói, RJ) lives and works in São Gonçalo, a metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro. The artist, who holds a degree in journalism with a specialization in African Literatures from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, uses clay, earth, and soil as both material and philosophical starting points for her work. Experimenting with textures and techniques that carry a connection to Afro-Brazilian and Afro-diasporic identity, Marinho explores organic and abstract forms in both her sculptural works and the paintings she creates with earth. In doing so, she combines a subjective and corporeal relationship with nature, which she researches and collects from the territories she encounters in order to compose her pieces.
In addition to offering fresh perspectives on the language of ceramics, Marinho's work is imbued with an active connection to art education, through which she experiments with collective practices and creates bridges between artistic production, knowledge of the earth, and people's lives.
In the past two years, Marinho has participated in the artist residency and exhibition The Whisper Beneath at Taipei Artist Village, Taiwan, invited by 01.01 ArtPlatform, and an artist residency and open studio in Luanda, Angola, invited by the MOVART gallery. She was selected as one of the ten emerging Black artists in Brazil by MOOC100 and was nominated for the Pipa Prize in 2023. Among her exhibitions, the following stand out: Ofício: Barro: Gabriella Marinho: Argila-Griô (Solo, Sesc Pompeia, São Paulo, 2024); Ancestral: Afro-Americas [USA and Brazil] (Group, MAB FAAP, São Paulo / CCBB BH, Belo Horizonte, 2024; CCBB RJ, Rio de Janeiro, 2025); Do barro ao corpo – a experiência feminina na cerâmica (Solo, Sesc São Gonçalo, Rio de Janeiro, 2019); Ressignificar no Tempo (Group, MOVART, Luanda, 2024); Um defeito de cor (Group, MUNCAB, Salvador, 2023; Sesc Pinheiros, São Paulo, 2024); The Whisper Beneath (Group, Treasure Hill Artist Village, Taiwan, 2022); Crônicas Cariocas (Group, Museum of Art of Rio, Rio de Janeiro, 2021).
