Overview

The Panorama of Brazilian Art series, initiated in 1969, is a landmark in the history of exhibitions. The first Panorama coincided with the inauguration of the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo (MAM) at its headquarters in the Ibirapuera Park marquee. With the start of renovations at the marquee in 2024, MAM has temporarily vacated its headquarters and is expected to return in early 2025. The museum’s calendar and all activities have been maintained thanks to the support and hospitality of partner institutions with historical ties to MAM, such as the São Paulo Biennial Foundation, which is hosting part of its team, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo (MAC USP), which not only provides space for collaborators but also houses the 38th Panorama of Brazilian Art. Developed by curators Germano Dushá, Thiago de Paula Souza, and Ariana Nuala, the project for the 38th Panorama of Brazilian Art: A Thousand Degrees stems from a colloquial expression that has multiple meanings, but always conveys a sense of high intensity. The exhibition highlights conditions marked by heat, melting, and drastic changes in any existing material. In this edition, the contemporary world is viewed through extreme conditions, addressing both historical and sociopolitical issues as well as ecological and technological discussions. MAM has been establishing partnerships with institutions in the cultural axis of Ibirapuera Park. Holding the 38th Panorama of Brazilian Art at MAC USP not only signifies a historical connection between the two institutions but also represents a moment of integration and combined efforts in favor of art and its audiences. MAM thanks MAC USP for its warm reception.
