Biografia [Biography]

Paulo Roberto Leal (Rio de Janeiro, 1946 – Rio de Janeiro, 1991) worked primarily with painting while continuously experimenting with unconventional materials and supports throughout his career. He began his artistic practice in the late 1960s, alongside his work as an economist at the Central Bank of Brazil. From the early 1970s onward, he developed a body of work marked by formal rigor and an interest in the plastic qualities of paper, engaging in a self-taught investigation into the boundaries of painting and constructive visual language.

His practice is defined by ongoing research into the materiality of support and the use of repetitive, modular processes. He frequently worked with kraft and fine papers, machine-stitched fabrics, and acrylic boxes to create objects and compositions that challenge the limits between painting, sculpture, and installation. Series such as ArmagensDes-mov-emArmaduras, and Cartas reflect Leal’s engagement with ephemerality, the interplay of color, structure, and space, and a dialogue between constructive and conceptual approaches. In 1984, he co-curated the landmark exhibition Como vai você, Geração 80? at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro, alongside Marcus de Lontra Costa and Sandra Magger—a landmark moment in Brazilian art of that decade.

Throughout the 1980s, Leal expanded his use of color and began incorporating references to urban space and architecture into his works, as seen in Regata (1985) and in the series Habitantes and Fachadas. Despite maintaining a parallel career in public service, he developed a singular artistic language that moved fluidly between the constructive, the sensorial, and the poetic.

Following his untimely death, the Projeto Concreto/PRL was established in 1993 by Roberto Pontual, Armando Mattos, and Manfredo de Souza Netto with the goal of preserving and promoting his legacy. In 1995, the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAM Rio) inaugurated the Centro de Referência Iconográfica e Textual Paulo Roberto Leal, housing documentation left by the artist under the care of Armando Mattos.

Paulo Roberto Leal participated in the Venice Biennale in 1972 and 1980, where he received significant attention, and in the 11th São Paulo Bienal in 1971, where he was awarded a prize. Recent solo and group exhibitions featuring his work include: Estado bruto (Group, MAM Rio, Rio de Janeiro, 2021); Casa carioca (Group, MAR, Rio de Janeiro, 2021); Espaços articulados (Solo, Paço Imperial, Rio de Janeiro, 2015); As If Sand Were Stone: Contemporary Latin American Art from the AGO Collection (Group, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, 2017); Sensitive Geometries (Group, Hauser & Wirth, New York, 2013); and Da matéria nasce a forma (Solo, MAC Niterói, 2007).

His work is included in major public collections, such as the Museum of Art of São Paulo (MASP), the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAM Rio), the Museum of Contemporary Art of Niterói (MAC-Niterói), and the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, Canada. Among the most significant awards he received are the São Paulo Bienal Prize (1971), the Acquisition Prize at the National Salon of Modern Art (1970), and the Acquisition Prize at the National Salon of Visual Arts (1982).
